PINGTAN is an island, a museum, and now it is also the name of an lamp. Each one is a different scale of the same shape, a reference to the experience of natural elements which merge together.
Light, in nature and in architecture, is a sign of life; in the PINGTAN lamp, the light itself leads you to imagine real life, on the outside. The organic shape of an island is used for the internally plied transparent body to ensure that the signs of the level curves come to life with a slight glow and interact smartly with the light to diffuse it and calibrate its emission. PINGTAN's light is emitted by an LED strip that stretches along the length of the base profile and it is injected into a plate that extracts it in a diffused and uniform way. The body then diffuses it into the surroundings in a controlled manner, concentrating greater brightness in points which correspond to knots in the architecture. The result is a comfortable, glare-free light, which is perfect on the wall or ceiling, capable of being combined to form multiple configurations and evolve through integration with digital smart technology. PINGTAN was designed by MAD Architects, a collaboration of Ma Yansong, Dang Qun, Yosuke Hayano, Andrea D’Antrassi, Marco Gastoldi, and Casey Kell.
